It's the summer of 1981 and after months of undercover work, Special Agent Jim LaChance breaks up an international poaching ring specializing in endangered animals and finally gets some time off. Heading to Maine to visit family on the Penobscot Indian reservation with his new girlfriend, he imagines a few weeks of well deserved R& R. He's looking forward to starting a new case focused on bald eagle poaching around the lakes and rivers of his home state. Instead his vacation is cut short and he's flown back to Washington, D. C. where the CIA pressures him to take on the case of a lifetime. Within weeks LaChance is kayaking solo in the East Siberian Sea, heading for the greatest challenge of his career. He's got five days to get into Siberia and out again with a valuable Cold War defector, who may not even want to defect. Racing against the coming winter ice, and the encircling KGB, LaChance will need all his skills to get home alive.
