Niel Ballingall was one of the most influential Factors of his time and would serve in that position for an astounding 72 years. His son and even his grandson would also serve in the position until 1916. These three men left an indelible mark on the parish of Markinch in the Kingdom of Fife for at least more than a century. Each Factor left their own unique mark on the Balfour estates of Balbirnie and Balgonie for years to come. Some of their engineering feats were quite remarkable for their times and still can be seen even today.
