Under the leadership of their captains, a degraded commander and a smuggler, a crew of strange characters and former soldiers try to solve the mystery of a mysterious data crystal in the chaotic beginning of a war, which is supposed to slaughter the masterminds behind countless attacks on the Clan Federation. But the information leads to a much more horrible and larger conspiracy than had been suspected. The book was influenced by the author's partly autobiographical experiences and repeatedly oscillates between dark, partly humorous episodes and a ruthlessly unembellished cynicism.
