Sarah and her brother Michael move to New Orleans, where they discover a doorway, hidden in a secret garden. They must find a missing key, lost in a deep and dangerous swamp, and lock the doorway before the rats can slip through. Along the way, Sarah must free her cats and her brother from the clutches of the evil rat queen, defeat an army of rats, and restore Belle to the throne of Cathaven. Facing rats armed with deadly plague, getting lost in the Dismal Swamp, and fleeing from hungry alligators, Sarah must overcome her fear of monsters in the dark, and discover the true meaning of bravery.
