Faithful Christians have venerated the artifacts from the Passion of Christ since early times. They carefully buried the remains of the early martyrs in the catacombs below Rome and in places of honor. The Church has always known this and that is why she has, from the beginning, taken great care of the relics and artifacts from the life of Christ and his disciples and saints. The Church also knows that the bodies of our departed family are important to us. We take special care of our dead, honoring them with elaborate markers and bringing flowers to their graves long after they have left this earth. This is why the Church honors and vener-ates the remains of the holy men and women known as saints. There is an intimate connection between the departed and their earthly remains.
