The purpose of this book is to provide the reader with a definition, history, and review of the literature on the subject of African American psychology and mental health, from an African centered perspective. The pioneers and practitioners of African/Black psychology and family therapy will be explored and examined. As a professor of psychology at an HBCU, I wanted to create a resource that would introduce the undergraduate reader to the much needed subject of African American and or Black psychology from an African centered perspective. I am for the most part the editor of the information in this book. My goal is to let the most noted pioneers and theoreticians of African American Black psychology, as well as the field of family therapy, speak for themselves. Excerpts from books and papers and interviews will be quoted. In addition, traditional African healing rituals and therapeutic interventions such as Kemetic / Egyptian Yoga will also be explored.
