Historical Sketch And Roster Of The District of Columbia 1st Infantry Battalion
John C Rigdon
The Washington, DC 1st Infantry Battalion was organized at Washington, D. C., for the defense of that city in April, 1861. It was attached to Mansfield's Command, Dept. of Washington, to June, 1861. They were involved in several early skirmishes including the Expedition to Rockville, Md., June 10-July 7.; Seneca Mills June 14.; and Great Falls July 7, 1861. Following the end of their 90 days enlistment, the battalion was disbanded, but many of the men joined other commands. This roster represents some of the earliest enthusiasts for the war who had gathered in Washington as the war began.
