John Stewart, a worldly college professor and widower doesn't realize that his life is about to change when he crashes his car into an Amish buggy on a road near an Amish community in rural Pennsylvania, almost killing Miriam Miller, an Amish widow and her Grandfather. Injured, they take him to recover at their home and from that time on, the religious differences cause a controversy that contributes to a growing attraction between the two. His curiosity about the Amish way of life is piqued when she tries to convince the now agnostic professor in the power of the Ordnung, the unwritten law of the Amish. Through his observing her family that consists only of a Grandfather and a teen age son, he soon learns that the Amish way of life is more than just religion and a plain way of living. He also discovers that the more he learns, the more he is unexpectedly falling for much more than their plain and simple lifestyle. When the church forces her to marry within her faith, he begins to use whatever means he can to rescue her from an unwanted marriage. He soon discovers she holds a terrible secret within her heart and disappears from the home. Heartbroken, He searches for her and finds her in a most unlikely place on earth. When their two worlds collide, which will give in and at what cost?
