While draining an old mill pond in the small Eastern NC town of Cattail Creek, the contractor doing the work makes a startling discovery. The remains of a young child are discovered, half buried in the muddy bottom. Connor and Andrea are called upon to organize a team to investigate; to find out if the child was one who was reported missing forty-seven years earlier. To complicate matters, someone in the small town of Cattail Creek doesn't want the investigation to proceed and threatens the PI and his wife if they continue looking into the matter. Who is this person and what is their interest in the case? The pair continues with the investigation until gunshots ring out and one of their team goes down. Now the couple is faced with another investigation; to find the shooter and bring him to justice. Their investigation into the child's identity continues with some of the team members hiding their own dark secrets. The story races to a startling conclusion which catches the investigating team off guard and provides the town with the final closure in the mystery.
