On the twenty-ninth of each month, a New Yorker mysteriously disappears with only jumbles of letters left in their wake. The Police Department isn't interested in a phantom kidnapper if there are no bodies. Detective Jess Tedesco thinks something more devious is going on. And she's right. With her partner on personal leave, she resorts to a brash young cop with a chip on his shoulder large enough to sink her entire investigation. Her best friend Book, a heroin addict, inadvertently involves her in a cartel war with tainted smack filling up the city morgue. Corruption runs rampant on both sides of the law as the trail winds to a rich family shredded by the murder of their parents nearly thirty year ago. That crime remains unsolved, but the ramifications of this one doesn't afford that luxury.
