Gloucestershire, England, at the end of the 19th century. Jeremy, an orphan, hired as a gardener, then stable boy at Cheltenham manor, falls madly in love with Mary, the only daughter of Lady Cheltenham.
This impossible dream turns into drama, as Jeremy, ensnared by some crooks, is imprisoned, and sent far away from England with no hope of return.
However, he will spare no effort to find Mary again, to thwart plots and prove his innocence.
