The Lutheran dogma of the Holy Scripture is interpreted in the perspective of a pragmatic concept of understanding as found in Ludwig Wittgenstein's Philosophical Investigations. The teaching on the verbal inspiration of Scripture hence comes to stand as a pneumatological theory on the biblical text by means of which God leads mankind to salvation. Problems regarding the interpretation of Scripture in Quenstedt's work derive from an insufficient reflection on the relation of faith and theology. Nonetheless Quenstedt's theology can contribute new insights to the ongoing discussion on Biblical Theology and Canon.
