Design of a radix-4 universal multiplier using ripple carry adder circuit in the partial product lines in order to speed-up the carry propagation, it is a very new approach in multiplier units for signed and unsigned binary number. The universal multiplier architecture is almost similar to the hybrid multiplier which is presented in the literature using carry save adder (CSA) in the partial product lines and ripple carry adder. In this work, it presents radix-4 universal multiplier for both signed and unsigned binary number while in the hybrid multiplier, it has presented only signed and signed numbers multiplication. The results present show that the universal multiplier compares favorably in area and timing performance with the architecture with Hybrid architecture with CSA up to 8-bits multiplication using xilinx8.2i software-tool and Spartan-3 FPGA.
