Freshwater ecosystems in the tropics host a diverse endemic fauna including freshwater crabs, but the rapid loss and deterioration of habitat means that many species are now under imminent threat. Crabs play an important role in human disease transmission, as second intermediate hosts for the vectors of paragonimiasis and onchocerciasis. Freshwater crabs due to their role in nutrient cycle, water quality monitoring and small-scale fisheries have been considered as ecologically as well as economically important group. The reproductive characteristics of a species or population are result of the interactions between various exogenous and endogenous factors.
