The backpacker segment is undoubtedly one of the fastest growing segments of the tourism trade. Research has shown that backpackers spread their expenditure over a wider geographic area, bringing benefits to remote and otherwise economically depressed regions through their expenditure. Ghana stands as one of the destinations in the West African sub-region that are drawing the attention of backpackers, mostly because she abounds in budget accommodation facilities, authentic local cultures and adventure sites, not leaving out the general inexpensive nature of the destination, which is also a strong driver. This book examines issues relating to the background characteristics of backpackers who travel to Ghana, activities undertaken, motivations for traveling and expenditure patterns, using the Cape Coast-Elmina conurbation. It proffers recommendations regarding how more backpackers could be attracted to the country and tapped to benefit the economically depressed regions in the country, thereby, reducing poverty levels while spreading development through tourism. The book is useful to researchers in the field of contemporary tourism as well as policy makers in the tourism industry.
