Functional Literacy & Women's Empowerment: Roger's Framework Revisited
Purna Dash
This book aims to provide evidences to the policy makers, academicians, researchers and implementers on the linkages between adult (functional) literacy programs and Women Empowerment in the state of Andhra Pradesh, India, where the Self Help Group (SHG) movement is very strong. Though the government of Andhra Pradesh have made attempts to provide functional literacy programs through its district centers and below, the results are below the expected level. The present study makes an attempt to find out the gaps in the program and suggest appropriate policy measures. It is found that, the relationship between literacy and empowerment is bidirectional and there is high need for departmental coordination in order to make the literacy programs more effective. This issue is extremely important at the current juncture, as the harassment and physical attacks on women/females is increasing day by day and the domestic violence has become a common phenomenon. Economic and Social empowerment of the women is the need of the hour. It is expected that the readers would learn from the findings mentioned in the book and make use of the same for future policy making.
