Based on research carried in Kenyan secondary schools, this book has been specially written to give teachers and students a rationale for the reader-text interactive approach to the teaching and learning of imaginative texts at the classroom level as opposed to the traditional teacher-centered techniques. Throughout the book, emphasis is lad on the practical ideas that teachers could use with students when handling literary texts with a view to integrating the English language and literature in ESL contexts. Ultimately, the book demonstrates the need for teacher training institutions and material developers to take into account the integrated curriculum tenets at all times if interactivity has to be attained. The author calls on teachers to avoid the know-it-all approach to teaching and become facilitators of learning while encouraging creative learner-based communication in the classroom.
