Reflection of Male Gender Dominance: Gender Influence
Haile Kassahun
This research paper is based on the expressions spoken against women. It comprises of proverbs and other expressions that degrade women in Ethiopia. For the sake of convenience, the researchers randomly selected four languages from Ethiopia (Amharic, Oromo, Awingi and Shinasha)and gathered some commonly spoken expressions against women from native speakers of each language. Almost all the expressions are identical in meaning in all languages. They indicate that women are inferior to men in many aspects. The researchers concluded that these expressions in turn led women to poor participation in education and the social aspects that require women participation. Hence, the country itself couldn't use the human power properly. Due to this reason, it couldn't reach at the development expected from it. The government and the community should think ways of avoiding the expressions that degrade women. It is through this avoidance that we succeed in using the potential of women in the country as a whole.
