The book portrays some aspects of the contextual configuration of English Friday sermons, which have been for years scheduled to be delivered in the mosques throughout Singapore. Thus, it tries to explain (1) the communicative purposes served in the English Friday sermon texts; (2) the linguistic features characterizing the communicative purposes of those sermon texts; and (3) the way the sermon texts are organized into their schematic structures. Referring to the model offered by Eggins (1994), and Eggins and Slade (1997), the author may categorize the selected prepared Friday sermons as the genre of religious service. The Generic Structure Potential derived may be capable of accomplishing the service and be a condensed statement and a powerful device that generates a large number of possible actual structures.
