Research in Library & Information Science in India: Trends & Patterns
Reshma Verma
The present work attempts a comprehensive review of research works accomplished in Library and Information Science discipline in India during 1957-2006 with a view to examine the trends in and pattern of research at the national level with a special focus on doctoral research work done at Department of Library & Information Science, Panjab University, Chandigarh. Initially, the research in library science in India remaining a sporadic activity for about two decades reached its threshold point in 1977 to touch the ?water divide? mark by 1990. The 1990s recorded a rapid growth in both the number of doctoral degree awarded and geographical spread of universities/ institutes running doctoral degree programmes in the country. Panjab University has covered diverse sub-fields and emerging themes more than the national level. Diversity of themes and use of scientific methods in research, is a marked feature of doctoral dissertations at Panjab University which has prompted one of the researcher to formulate as many as 20 hypotheses for empirical testing.
