Functional Dyspepsia: is Proton Pump Inhibitor Therapy Justified?
Kaushal Kishor Prasad
Dyspepsia is found in 20% to 40% of the normal population in western countries and the annual incidence is over 1%. The majority of patients who seek medical attention have continued symptoms over a 1 to 5 year period. Most patients with uninvestigated dyspepsia are found to have functional dyspepsia in Asia, as organic causes are quite uncommon. We conducted the study where we tried to look into basal acid output in two main subgroups of functional dyspepsia patients according to Rome III classification, and tried to correlate basal acid output and H. pylori status with symptom genesis and functional dyspepsia subgroup. Effect of proton pump inhibitors is measured by improvement in predominant symptoms of functional dyspepsia subgroup.
