Helmut Meier analyzes the image of Africans in pro- and anti-slavery texts from the British debate on the slave trade. He argues that by portraying African slaves as suffering wretches, anti-slavery texts created colonial others, who could subsequently become the objects of a discourse of colonial reform and 'betterment.'
