Energy monitoring has been gradually and autonomously developing over the last four decades. In the view of the ongoing political efforts to shift energy related industrial behaviour, it is important to provide a full picture of its elements. Research effort to identify the appropriate placement of energy monitoring within an industrial organisation and its management systems is assisted by an overview of legal, political, market, and management factors and multiple case studies. Complimentary benefits resulting from proper regard of the energy factor within organisation are revealed. This work shall be of interest for various company divisions in charge of cost, quality, energy, environmental, and knowledge management. The interdisciplinary study cases allowed concluding that full integration of energy monitoring within an organisation and its business and production management is indispensable in the energy efficiency quest. The crucial role of supportive forces like energy-awareness culture, strategic significance assigned to investments in energy saving and benchmarking, is brought up.
