Let?s Play Now!: Guided Sight-reading Exercises for Group Piano
Jairo Geronymo
This method addresses a vacuum in the market for a sight-reading method specific to the instruction of Piano in a group setting. Sight-reading as a Piano Ensemble helps students deal with their inhibition and develops important ensemble and aural skills. The first section of this method discusses general considerations regarding Class Piano, the assets and liabilities of such a setting and the necessity of such a method. The method itself is divided into sections specifically addressing rhythmic reading, pieces employing five-finger position only, intermediate pieces and advanced pieces employing auxiliary skills. Each piece in the method is accompanied by a brief commentary on the specific aspect of sight-reading that it addresses, a report on how classes have responded to that specific exercise, as well as practical advice for instruction and performance. The pieces in this method have been used to teach university level Class Piano as well as group lessons for youngsters with emphasis on sight-reading. These pieces have also been used as group recital pieces, which are very popular with the students. Let?s Play Now!
