The Republic of Macedonia is a multilingual and ethnically diverse society serving as an ideal scientific laboratory for linguistic studies on multilingualism, particularly language contact. The importance of this book is of a twofold nature. Firstly, the author gives us a detailed and explicit description of Gostivar Turkish (A West Rumelian Turkish Dialect). Secondly, she presents a comprehensive analysis of the contact phenomena within a language contact framework and maps this Rumelian Turkish dialect as a salient member of the Balkansprachbund. Based on synchronic spoken data from Gostivar Turkish (GT) the book provides a clear analyses on language convergence, grammatical borrowing, contact-induced grammaticalization enhanced with examples from GT, Macedonian, Albanian and Standard Turkish.
