Corneal damage caused by surgical procedures or trauma, results in the severing of corneal nerves and the subsequent reduction in corneal sensitivity. This in turn might compromise the blink response, induce dry eye symptoms, reduce tear flow and increase tear osmolarity. After surgery, subbasal corneal nerves regenerate which results in an improvement in corneal sensitivity.
