Augustine's and Wesley's Concepts of Prevenient Grace: a Comparative Study
Moi Kieng Ting
This thesis is an explorative study to compare Augustine and Wesley?s concepts of prevenient grace, in order to find out their similarities and differences. The study reveals 16 similarities and 11 differences between Augustine and Wesley?s concepts of prevenient grace. From these findings, this thesis further infers that some kinds of relationships exist between Augustine and Wesley?s concepts of prevenient grace. Since the similarities outnumber the differences and relationships possibly exist between Augustine and Wesley?s concepts of prevenient grace, this thesis further suggests that instead of labelling Wesley?s concept of prevenient grace as semi-Pelagian, it is perhaps justifiable to call it semi-Augustinian. Finally, this study invites readers to further examine the suggested possible relationships between Augustine and Wesley?s concepts of prevenient grace, to study relationships between their other theological concepts, and even to construct an Augustinian-Wesley legacy.
