The Kibbutz concept has historically been both idealized and misconstrued. Using the story of Degania as a case study, existing historiography regarding the formation of the kibbutz identity is surveyed and analyzed in order to determine whether it was ideology or pragmatism that played the central role in creation of the first permanent kvutza. With Degania facing identity-altering changes, this question is now more applicable than ever.
