Perspectives on Music Interpretation: Instrumentation, Memory, Metaphor and Theatrical Intention
Aiyun Huang
In this book, I address how experimenting with instrumentation, memorization techniques, metaphor, and theatrical intention are effective ways of developing interpretations. Four solo percussion pieces serve as the body of work for the discussion. In Désastre by Inouk Demers, experimentation with the percussion set-up is the key to the development of an ideal interpretation. In Autumn Island by Roger Reynolds, the effectiveness of memory experiments and of the study of musical sketches become a part of my interpretation. In Rogosanti by James Wood, the composer provides a metaphor that underlies the composition of the piece, and I further expand the metaphor to define my interpretation. In Le Corps à Corps by Georges Aperghis, theatrical intention is the focal point and the balance between musical behavior and theatrical behavior becomes the way through which I find my interpretation.
