World has experienced remarkable shifts during the late nineteenth century and early twentieth century. The shifts can be observed in every fiber of the society. Modern civilization is cut off from its past due industrialization, urbanization and secularization. Therefore, modernism is an important aspect of English poetry. William Butler Yeats (1865-1939), William Carlos Williams (1883-1963), Ezra Pound (1885-1927) and Thomas Stearns Eliot (1888-1965) are some of important poets in modern period. Moreover, World War I has important role in shattering traditional beliefs. As a result, values, conventions and life style have changed. Moreover, scientific innovation has important role to bring social changes. Many modern writers have been influenced by the crisis of early twentieth century society. Therefore, the purpose of this book is to focus on how a few major modern poets have responded to modern civilization. This book not only discusses modern poetry but also explains the sense of cultural loss in European society due to warfare.
