Although one of the most complex electrochemical techniques, cyclic voltammetry is very frequently used because it offers a wealth of experimental information and insights into both the kinetic and thermodynamic details of many chemical systems. Because of significant advances in the theoretical understanding of the technique, today, even more complex chemical systems such as electrodes modified with film or particulate deposits may be studied quantitatively by cyclic voltammetry. Cyclic voltammetry is most commonly used to investigate the polymerization of new monomer. Polymerization and film deposition are characterized by increasing peak currents for oxidation of the monomer on successive cycles, and the development of redox waves for the polymer at potential below the onset of monomer oxidation. The polymer film deposited on the electrode can be used for electrocatalysis and also to detect specific analyte in some samples
