The Dane Rufus Lieder fancies himself an artist and a free spirit, but when he moves to South-Eastern Europe he is confronted with his own extreme stiltedness. His cultural fetters become painfully obvious against the background of the life unfolding around him, and he resolves to assimilate as much of the local culture as he can.
Returning to Denmark after three years, he seems to have acquired a new pair of eyes; what he sees is no longer a worldly paradise but a surreal structure where automatons in human form relate to each other only through pre-determined paradigms. Rufus perceives the beating hearts, but an invisible force is constraining them within a metal cage, and he sets out to find the souce of the malaise.
Meanwhile, the head of Anticonsensus, a mysterious foreign enterprise, arrives in Copenhagen with a diabolical agenda and immediately starts ripping the fabric of Danish society apart, while an association of expatriates establish the much-needed Help a Dane Day.
