While teaching at the university of Paris, John of Garland, in addition to more ambitious works, wrote several didactic texts. His Misteria Ecclesie treat with didactic brevity: the symbolism of the church-buildings, the ecclesiastical order of the clergy, vestments, liturgy, the canonical year, the Eucharist. His source is a treatise of Ps.- Hugo of St. Victor.
