Predication is fundamentally a discursive act which in the French language is generally accomplished by a predicative verb and more rarely by an adjective, a noun or a preposition used in a predicative way. In light of two grammatical theories which are both structural and functional, developed by Simon Dik and Robert van Valin, the author points to the qualitative and participatory characteristics of the "verbal predication" in the particular meaning it is given in the "Functional Grammar." These two types of characteristics represent the semantic elements which interact with the syntactic transitivity. The discussion of these characteristics allows for a hierarchical classification of verbal predications. The analysis of the loss of aptitude of the predicative function of different classes of verbal entries generates a certain continuum of predicativity (auxiliarity). And through three comparative studies of French and German, the author finally demonstrates that certain structural characteristics of the French verbal lexicon are most clearly derived from a comparison between languages, based on a large corpus of translations.
