Abraham the Great of Kashkar, considered the father of Near Eastern monasticism, inspired a true renaissance of monasticism and asceticism with his reforms of the Assyrian church. From the 6th century onwards, the great monastery of Mt. Izla in northern Mesopotamia became a focal point in Christian Assyrian theology and the spread of monasticism. Affiliated monasteries throughout Babylonia, Persia and the Susiana contributed to the extraordinary floruit of this reformist movement, as well as to the perseverance of Christian Assyrian communities despite other Christological movements and the arrival of Islam.
