In this book Russian grandmaster Alexey Bezgodov recommends to answer 1. d4 with 1?d5 and then, on your second move, to play ? 2?Bf5! In reply to 2. c4 this is known as the Baltic Defence, but Bezgodov shows you can also liberate your bishop against 2. Nf3. By freeing your queenside bishop you will (a) surprise your opponet, (b) develop a piece, (c) control the important square e4 (d) immediately solve on of the problems Black faces in queenside openings: the development of the bishop on c8. Not a bad score for one move! If White does not immediately take decisive action, then within a move or two he can kiss goodbye to any hopes on an opening advantage. Of course, White is not without some strong resources, but Bezgodov presents a system that is perfectly viable. Former Russian Champion Alexey Bezgodov has created considerable chunks of new and surprising opening theory, but does not overload the pages with endless variations. HIs explanations are clear, entertaining and always to the point.
