Photos of Mono Lake (TeniegaBah)
Home to trillions of brine shrimp, over two million waterbirds, including 35 species of shorebirds. No fish live in the lake due to the hyper salinity and high alkalinity, the food chain is based on the high population of single-celled plantonik algae present in the photic zone of the lake and attracts alkali flies that serve as food for the migratory and nesting birds.. Believed to have formed at least 760,000 years ago, dating back to the Long Valley eruption, Mono Lake holds an odd beauty in their Tufa towers, originally forming at the bottom of the lake, hundreds if not thousands of years ago, by limestone consisting primarily of calcium carbonate materials such as calcite, as the water levels fell, the towers became more visible. The lake is closed, meaning it has no outflow, contributing to the high alkalinity. In 1978 the Mono Lake Committee was formed and has worked to protect Mono Lake, restore it's tributary streams and surrounding lands, and educate the next generation about wise water use.
