In 1992 Europe takes a gigantic step towards unity. Yet at the same time the peoples of Central Europe are reemerging, and a new age of nationalism looms. In the last century a great Central European statesman tried to make the entire continent act as one in working for peace. If Clemens von Metternich's battle with liberalism does not endear him, his struggle to preserve the frontiers of 1815 should be remembered, by the Community and by a Mitteleuropa which will be in turmoil should the 1945 frontiers be questiones a nightmare which may well come true.
