Achebe is a 32-year-old missionary in Ghana; Titi is a 27-year-old bible student. By coincidence, the two meet and develop interest in walking and doing the work of God together. Now, a bond of friendship has ensued between them and, incidentally, they have agreed to build their lives together as husband and wife. But both have a long and difficult battle to fight before they can get married. Through love and commitment, they fight and overcome all odds and finally get married. But they have married without a source of income; however, not long after, the man has a financial breakthrough. In his blessings, he honors their marriage vows, shares all things with the woman, and makes her feel like a queen. Unfortunately, he loses his job and, not long after, the woman gains an opportunity and eventually becomes the breadwinner of the house. Sadly, joblessness and its attendant poverty become the man's crime against his wife. Everything about him is now bad, offensive, and disgusting as long as he is unable to live up to his responsibilities. In reaction, she becomes intolerant, contentious, and repulsive; and she persecutes him and denies him basic rights and privileges. As it were, until he defeats poverty, decency will never return to his marriage. But, in a twist, the woman's world comes crumbling while a great and sudden opportunity beckons on the man. It is an opportunity of a lifetime; thankfully, by it, decency and normalcy instantly return to their home.
