Steve Quinn has finally arrived at La Paz, and is being ferried across the Sea of Cortez to the Mexican mainland. He is feeling beaten up, old, and the stress of surviving the violence of the Baja is evident on his face and attitude. His attempt to get back to Canada is not going easily. Caught in another bandito ambush, with a wounded passenger and a bloody arrival at the border, and a very unfriendly Army general all contribute to Steve's mounting difficulties. When his son arrives with the news of an unprovoked Government attack on his empire, and he learns of the Canadian efforts being made to save a ravaged U. S., he is thrust right back into the business and personal world he has tried so hard to escape. Then Kathy, his wife, and her friends cannot be found in earthquake ravaged Mexico. The very complicated troubles Steve now finds himself in leads him to risking everything including his life to save himself and his empire.
