After his regiment is slaughtered in an ill-fated attack, a wounded Tyris Wake escapes the battlefield and pushes himself through enemy territory to find someone to whom he can report the enemy's deadly new weapon. In the woods, he meets a woman wearing a mask who beats him and leaves him for dead. As their paths continue to cross, he learns this mysterious woman has a terrifying secret that has forced her to work against her own people. Despite being from opposite sides in the war between Gosland and Nalyria, and despite their own personal biases against the other's culture, Tyris and the masked woman form a temporary alliance to pursue a common goal. Personal differences aside, this will not be easy. Enemy patrols and nature prove equally challenging obstacles as Tyris struggles to save the lives of his people, and his new companion strives to make amends for her past sins.
