Prince Leif and Princess Briar are children when the one-eyed unicorn comes. It takes their father's life before it vanishes once more. Grief takes their mother. Leif grows into an ineffectual leader, allowing his advisor to make all his decisions for him; Briar refuses to let despair destroy her, and spends every moment training for the one-eyed unicorn's return. When Briar's childhood friend, a peasant boy named Selim, has a prophetic vision of the kingdom aflame, and Leif killed, Briar is sure the unicorn will be responsible. Together they set off through the Wilderness, a land full of beasts warped by dark magic, to slay the one-eyed unicorn before the foretold ruin can come about. Meanwhile, Leif becomes embroiled in political schemes, and comes to understand what it truly is to be king.
