Escaping an abusive husband, Meadow finds herself house-sitting in a tiny one-street hamlet in the Scottish highlands called Candlelight Lane. She settles into small-town life, has a job delivering flowers and has set up a crafting business from her new spare room. She even has a date with a handsome, but awkward neighbour, Finn. But the date brings the discovery of a dead body guarded by a mysterious black cat she names Baudrons. When two more bodies show up the next day, there are too many questions being directed at both her and Finn that neither of them can answer.

Then a knife appears in her spare room and Meadow is convinced that Baudrons the cat has spoken to her and asked her to help solve the murders...
