When a maniacal plan by the mage lords to dominate and oppress the people of Rensselaer backfires, facts are hidden and lies are told to cover up the truth. The threads holding these secrets together begin unraveling when fledgling warlock Yerby Sallis, and aspiring bard Derris Golladay, form a loose alliance with the largest thieves' guild in Rensselaer, the Hidden Hand. Seeing opportunities for profit and revenge, the leader of the Hidden Hand, a gnomish wizard named Pendergas, sends his most-trusted lieutenant and 'fixer', a doppleganger called Mixeltout, to help Yerby and Derris as they begin restoring long-lost magics to the land. The repercussions of their first missions will haunt the city-state of Rensselaer for years to come.
