What They Don't See
Alena Gonzalez
The odds of you being born as you, are 1 in 400 trillion. Statistically, you shouldn't exist as you. Neither should I. But somehow, we do. It's a creepy thought. We beat a near most impossible statistic to end up as we are. But sometimes we don't always beat the odds. Sometimes we are the statistic that doesn't make it. Lost in the numbers. Forgotten. "Mr. and Mrs. Broad, hi, this is Miguel. The new teen you will be fostering." My social worker, Ms. Deborah, spoke for me. It was March 1st and I was about to move in with complete and utter strangers yet once again. But little did I know, the situation I was about to be in was far more complex than anything I had ever experienced or could ever prepare myself for. Something that seemed all so fictional in the moment, yet we stood at the front door facing the reality that was going to be my life for God knows how long.
