It is hardly surprising that Spanish schoolchildren know almost nothing about the Spanish Civil War. The liberal establishment, even more in control of the European media than in the United States, still prefers not to talk about it. Instead, they simply describe General Franco as a fascist dictator who kept Spain in chains for forty years, while never mentioning that during the Spanish Civil War, Stalin's technicians pretty much ran the Spanish republic, and had they won, Spain would have been the first western European nation to slide behind the iron curtain. This being the case, I am concerned that my Spanish grandchildren may never know what really happened during this horrible civil war. So, for their benefit I offer this brief history. I am sure there will be some who will question my facts. My information comes from forty years living and traveling in Spain and the study of hundreds of well-documented histories, which are readily available to anyone.
