Charles takes Caleb to Denver on his way home, and the doctors check Caleb over before allowing him to travel to Philadelphia. While in Denver, Charles visits Federal Judge Moore and purchases the ranches in Nevada that had belonged to Norman Guffy. Charles has his jockeys bring the Thoroughbreds to Philadelphia in preparation for the Belmont Stakes, with hopes of having Wind Fire earn the coveted Triple Crown. Charles discovers that his lumber for the new hotel is being stolen by a mobster and is being used to build the man's boat. One of the gangsters hires a known killer to kill Charles, and Charles soon learns that the Mayor, City Manager, Sheriff, and Judges are all on the gangster's payroll. Charles realizes that due to the badlands mission, the trouble in Nevada, and the horse racing, he has been ignoring his other businesses, and Russ Rivers joins him as Charles travels the country in search of a permanent career for Russ.
