Following its bloody birth, the young, new Red Empire is secretly trying to reach other galaxies. The Roanoake Expedition is launched in the southern part of the galaxy under the watchful eyes of the Red Emperor Himself, but the ships are apparently lost. In a new galaxy, the survivors crash-land. They have no way of communicating back home. As they struggle to forge a new way of life, they look hopefully outward into the stars from the creation of their new refuge. But the real danger lurks much closer, both within and without. What were the strange xeno-form ships sighted on their first arrival? Why do the forests seem to change overnight? As the secrets of time are unlocked, so the Kinsmen struggle against themselves, the aliens who were there before them, and finally ... the abandonment by the Red Emperor.
