Maggie Dunn has returned to Canada from the Isle of Skye in order to reclaim her identity. Since she became thirty years younger, she has been pursued by a geneticist obsessed with studying her and publishing the details of her amazing transformation. Unwilling to be a human laboratory and a media sensation, a woman with no privacy ever again, she had escaped to Skye and begun to build a new life. But when she became embroiled in a murder investigation there, her secrets were in danger of being revealed. Now she has decided she must confront the past in order to live a normal life. She returns to Canada with a new friend, Alison Budge, a rude, sullen feisty young Scotswoman fleeing her own past and determined to build a new life in Canada. The two women meet a young British accountant, Wolfe Corbyn, banished from his father's London bank because of his crimes there, and the three of them join forces in their quest to start again. Their friendship grows, each of them facing challenges as they move slowly forward. And then the unimaginable happens: Maggie, sick and confused since her arrival in Canada, disappears. Is she dead? Has she had to flee again? How will Alison and Wolfe find her? Their quest to find Maggie almost destroys the life they have begun to build, and the truth of her disappearance is more shocking than anything they could have imagined.
