. In Book 2 of this series, set in 1965, Detective Constable Anna Kinsale is well established in her job. The Sykes family appear once more. Dad and two of the three sons are involved in crime, but are losing out as their 'manor' is being taken over by the far more ruthless Lydon brothers and their gang members. The Lydons will stop at nothing to frighten the Sykes away from what is now considered to be the Lydons' territory. Detective Inspector Frank Fernbank is Anna's boss at Woodstone nick. She also works in close liaison with Detective Sergeant Murray Jacobs. This time Anna has to work under cover as a hostess in The White Swan night. Many such clubs sprang up in London at that time. The owners of some of these clubs used them as a cover for illegal activities, ranging from prostitution to drugs and general dodgy dealings. This particular club is owned and run by the Lydon brothers, Johnny and Jimmy. It's a risky task for Anna and both her boss and her colleagues believe she's capable of doing the job, but they are fearful for her safety. Several murders take place during the course of the investigation. Anna finds herself in the thick of it.
